21st June 2003 - Milton Keynes

This is a small diary of events and my feelings of the day we went to see Eminem Live at the Anger Management Tour 03 and man was it a long day but worth it in the end.

The day started of at 5am in the morning. We had to get up early because we had to catch a coach in Liverpool at 7am for our (what turned out to be) 5 hour drive down to Milton Keynes.

I went to pick up my mates Bryan and Mark at 5.45am and of we went to Liverpool. Met up with Richard and we then had to wait for the coach. This arrived just after 7am and we were on our way. (Detouring through Chester and Crewe to pick up more people.)

Five hours later with only stop we arrived at Milton Keynes. The time was now 12pm. There were already a few coaches there and a gathering of people but we managed to get close to the front of the queue Unfortunately this was the start of a 2-hour wait. I knew I should have sat down at this point. The sun was shining and it was very, very hot.

Finally the gates were opened and there was a big rush to get to the stage. Up and over this big hill we went but some how we managed to get separated loosing valuable time. Soon we were all back together and running towards the stage area. We ended up about 3 rows from the front unbeknown to us at this point we was going to have to stand there for a further 2 hours before Tim Westwood started his set and a further 2 hours after that before Cypress Hill would make an appearance.

Bryan decided that he had enough of standing in the sun and he wanted to go and sit of somewhere. That was most likely the best idea someone could have had in that sort of weather. But I was determined that I had worked so hard to get to this point that I was going to stay were I was and end up as close to the front as possible the other two agreed. So we stayed and of Bryan went on his own. This was the last I saw of him till we got back to the coach.

4pm: Tim West wood started his set. Even though Tim Westwoods music was good it would have been better if maybe we could of actually seen him on stage or maybe they put on some sort of display which we could of watched to pass the time. Everyone was getting very hot and bored. Soon people was starting a Mexican wave, which looked impressive and then people started to throw their water bottles. This (even though it was dangerous as they was hitting people) also looked impressive.

6pm: The music cut of and we knew at this point it was finally time for an act to come on stage. First of was Cypress Hill.

They had an impressive backdrop. Unfortunately the sound system wasn’t fully working and halfway through various tracks the sound would completely cut of. This didn’t impress the already bored and hot crowd. But most of all you felt for Cypress Hill. But with the quick thinking of the drummer, he managed to single handily impress the crowd with some freestyle drumming. Using his bare hands. This was a good display and soon the sound was fully on and Cypress Hill managed to fully complete a track. They went of and it was time to wait again. Next on was to be Xzibit someone who I was looking forward to see live.

7.30pmish Xzibit cam on stage. He came on stage on a tricycle and his performance was explosive.

After Xzibit Mark decided he had had enough of the heat and standing around so he decided to go of and find Bryan. Which just left Richard and me both determined to stick it out. We knew that it wouldn’t be long and Eminem would be on the stage more or less in front of us.

But as I predicted as soon as it was near the time for Eminem to come on lots of people was squashing the crowds’ forwards trying to get a better view. I kept loosing my space and unfortunately even though I was near the front I ended up being stuck behind tallish people. So I could no longer see much of the stage at all. But luckily enough they had a large screen just in front of me. So it was a little disappointing but ok. I was near the front that was all that mattered. Also lucky for me I had Richard holding me up and he was determined to try and stop people knocking me out of the way. He became my personal shield. Injuring him self in the process.

Eventually 9pm, the time had come for the Eminem Show to finally begin and man was the standing around, getting squashed and sun burn worth it. He was excellent.

It was strange. I guess because I ended up watching a lot of it on the screen it felt like I wasn’t there. Maybe the sun was getting to me. But I was there I could feel the buzz of the music. The atmosphere and the screaming girls were deafening us. It was an amazing time.

But as I said the sun was starting to get to me. Soon I was feeling like I was no longer enjoying the show. As I was starting to feel slightly unwell. So just after 50 Cent performed In Da Club I asked Richard if he would mind if we moved away from where we stood, as I needed air. I felt like I couldn’t breath. And man that was a good idea.

When we had eventually pushed threw the crowd we ended up on the outside area on the right. We could breathe we could sit down we could still see the show on the screen (which I was watching anyway) and I could finally see the stage! Not only could I see the stage but also I could actually watch Eminem performing. I finally started to enjoy the show. I just wish we had moved out earlier. Oh well I’ve learned for next time!

10.30pm the show was coming to the end. People started to slowly make there way out when Eminem went off stage for the first time but I knew he would come back on to do and encore.

He finished the show there was fireworks and then it all went dark. That was it that was the end. I felt all emotional. I knew it would most likely only hit me at the end that I was there I witnessed one of the biggest hip hop concerts that England had seen. With some of the biggest rap artists of our time. Right there on stage right in front of my eyes.

Time to head back to the coach. This gave me chance to actually look about the place. I grabbed some food brought a tour T-shirt and went back to the coach, hot, tired and very happy. Found Bryan and Mark, got on the coach for the long 5 hour drive back to Liverpool. I couldn’t wait to get into bed that night (or should I say morning) I finally got home just after 4am.
